CDVT Dimensioning in the ABR Service of ATM Networks

The Available Bit Rate Service (ABR) has been designed to be an eecient data transport Service for ATM networks. The standardization bodies have deened the Dynamic Generic Cell Rate Algorithm (DGCRA) as the Conformance Deenition for ABR. When setting up an ABR connection, a Cell Delay Variation Tolerance (CDVT) has to be negotiated for the DGCRA. In this report we study the CDVT dimensioning for ABR. We describe a queuing model of the DGRCA and an iterative method to solve the queue based on a renewal assumption. We show by simulation a typical evolution of the rates, delays and CDVT dimensioning involved in ABR in both a LAN and MAN framework. We use the simulation results to investigate the accuray of the renewal assumption. Finally, we investigate the innuence of the CDV in an ABR cell stream by means of an ABR worst case traac.
